RESOLUTION TO REMOVE SEN. MIKE SHIRKEY

February 11, 2021

WHEREAS, on January 6, 2021, domestic terrorists attacked our U.S. Capitol, endangering the lives of elected officials, staff, aides, and the Capitol police, killing a Capitol police officer and injuring scores of other officers, and;

WHEREAS, justice must be served for this officer, the many officers who were injured, and America, and;

WHEREAS, this attack on the people’s House, Congress, and our democratic institutions occurred because Donald John Trump and other Republicans perpetuated lies and refused to accept the 2020 election of Joe Biden. The seditious mob had been emboldened and incited by Donald John Trump, and;

WHEREAS, this reprehensible sedition has far too many links to the great State of Michigan. Michigan's Republican senator from the 16th District, Michael J. Shirkey, has claimed that the storming of the US Capitol was a “hoax”, and that it was “staged”, and despite all evidence to the contrary, that supporters of Donald John Trump did not carry out the insurrection. (https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2021/02/09/mike-shirkey-insurrection-hoax-trump/4455506001/), and;

WHEREAS, Sen. Shirkey did “once or twice, I did contemplate inviting [Governor Gretchen Whitmer] to a fistfight on the Capitol lawn...” (https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2021/02/09/mike-shirkey-insurrection-hoax-trump/4455506001/). Sen. Shirkey apparently lacks the confidence to make his threats of violence to Governor Whitmer directly, instead preferring to beat his own chest in front of his friends at Spangler's Family Restaurant in Jonesville, MI, and;

WHEREAS, serving in Michigan's legislature is an honor and a privilege. Previous legislators on both sides of the aisle represented this great State with honor and distinction, and;

WHEREAS, the conduct of Michigan's Republican senator from the 16th district, Michael J. Shirkey, has been beneath the dignity of the office he is privileged to hold, and has stained the reputation of the State of Michigan and the people of this State; and

WHEREAS, a man who spouts conspiracy theory nonsense, a man who engages in insurrection/gives aid to insurrectionists, a man who threatens violence against the duly elected governor of the State of Michigan, and a man who embarrasses the State of Michigan, its Senate, and Michigan's Republican Party is not worthy of being a senator in Michigan's government, let alone named Senate Majority Leader. Shirkey's actions and statements are unpatriotic, and un-American. Shirkey should face consequences for his actions, for his role in undermining our democracy and encouraging the violent overthrow of our government, and;

WHEREAS, Shirkey's actions must have consequences. Long after the free and fair election of November, 2020, Shirkey continues to spout nonsense and lies about the election, and about the insurrection led by Trump and the Republican Party. Nothing in American politics is more important than the peaceful transition of power, and accordingly, nothing warrants a swift, bipartisan response more than any attempt to interfere with that peaceful transition of power.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Board of the Northville Democratic Club calls for the immediate removal of Sen. Mike Shirkey, as unfit for office.
